Bosch Rexroth Hydraulics Challenge and London Eye Engineering Experience

Engineering learners at The JCB  Academy Sixth Form recently took part in the Bosch Rexroth Hydraulics Challenge, a specialist programme designed to deepen understanding of hydraulic systems, control technologies, and engineering design through real world application.

The challenge began with in-depth hydraulics teaching delivered by Bosch Rexroth engineers at the academy. These sessions focused on core hydraulic principles, system control, and the role of precision engineering in modern industrial environments. Learners then progressed to a visit to Bosch Rexroth headquarters in St Neots, where they worked hands-on with industrial hydraulic training rigs and explored a wide range of drive and control technologies during a guided factory tour.

A highlight of the programme was an exclusive after-hours engineering experience at the London Eye, delivered with the support of Merlin Entertainments. While the attraction was closed to the public, learners were given exceptional access to the structure and its operating systems. This included observing the hydraulic drive system in operation, moving beneath the structure to examine the hydraulic power pack, and studying pumps, valves, sensors, and preventative maintenance systems that ensure safe and reliable operation. Learners also explored how hydraulics supports the controlled movement of the passenger capsules.

By connecting classroom theory with large-scale, real-world engineering systems, the Bosch Rexroth Hydraulics Challenge brought learning to life and provided a rare insight into complex hydraulic applications. Experiences such as this directly support the academy’s mission of Changing lives by developing the engineers and business leaders of the future.
